Sensei Rodrigo Lucio de Souza is currently based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as a full-time Sensei instructing students of all ages in both group classes and private one on one trainings. Sensei Rodrigo moved to the UAE to develop Traditional Karate-Do at the Dubai Karate Centre, in his capacity as a Sensei and Coach, and is the center’s Traditional Karate-Do Technical Director, representing WTKF in the UAE.
“My karate history started when I was two years old, when I began my karate training with my father and Master Sensei José Humberto de Souza in Cuiabá, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil in 1983. At the age of 12, I began my athletic career. I was the second Kyu purple belt in my country, and for the first time I joined the regional team becoming the first place National Champion in the children’s category for the first time in 1993,” explains Sensei Rodrigo.
At the age of 15, Sensei Rodrigo was invited to join the Adult National Team, and at 16 years old he attainted his first Dan black belt. Simultaneously in 1996 he was awarded the silver medal at the Traditional Karate-Do World Championship in São Paulo-Brazil. “My results during my athlete career continued to demonstrate successful results. I was consistently at the top three or four at the world championships, and I was also awarded the Pan-American Champion six times, Adult National Champion 19 times, and Junior National Champion nine times,” he said.
In addition to Sensei Rodrigo’s athletic career, he was also starting to learn how to teach Karate. In 1998 at the age of 18, he officially started instructions as a Sensei at Shotokan Academy in Cuiabá-Brazil. Sensei Rodrigo was also part of the technical commission of the regional Traditional Karate-Do team and assisted the national team many times over the years.
From 1998 to 2005 Sensei Rodrigo also worked as a referee director of the regional team and a national judge. During this period, he also executed the official translation from English to Portuguese of the Traditional Karate-Do Competition Rules book with the Shotokan Academy team.
“I also developed the expertise with some of the biggest karate demonstrations on the American continent during the International and National Championships. In 2015 I created, produced, act and directed in three great shows in Cuiabá-Brazil doing the unpublished shows in the world combining karate with other arts like classical music performed live with an orchestra, theatre and dance.”

How about Some Facts about Sensei?
Sensei Rodrigo is a full-time instructor, a professional competitive athlete, and a lifelong student of Traditional Karate-Do Shotokan. His karate education was obtained under the close direction and tutelage of his father, Master Sensei Jose Humberto de Souza. Sensei Jose Humberto is a Black Belt 7th Dan WTKF, 5th Dan WKF and 3rd Dan JKA, with more than 48 years of training and teaching thousands of students around the world. Sensei Jose Humberto has the honor to train every year (sometimes twice or more times annually) with Traditional Karate-Do founder, Shihan Hidetaka Nishiyama. The Shotokan style of karate founded in 1936 by Gichin Funakoshi in Okinawa, Japan, and due to the efforts of his students became a worldwide force and is one of the most important martial arts in history.
Karate-Do Shotokan was developed by sensei Gichin Funakoshi in Okinawa, Japan. The word Karate-Do means “The Way of Empty Hand” and this concept explains that Karate is a martial art which uses just the body with no weapons or tools to apply the techniques, but it address much more than this. The Emptiness concept also conveys that all practitioners need to keep the mind empty of all else during training to learn easier and enhance focus.
Further, the Emptiness concept tell us that the karateka needs to come enter the Dojo (Training Hall) thinking that he is always a learning person: a white belt regarding his knowledge, a white and empty page where the Sensei can give the tools to draw or write without previous vices.
The karateka does not need to “erase” his or her knowledge, but instead have the mind set that he or she is always able to learn something new and will improve his or her technique as well.
Another analogy is that the karateka who attends the lesson needs to come with an “empty bottle”. Here the knowledge is represented by water, which can fill the vessel. If the bottle is filled up, no more water can fit inside. It’s necessary to drain out the bottle to put more water.
Traditional Karate-Do was developed by Sensei Hidetaka Nishiyama, one of the best students of Sensei Funakoshi. Nishiyama sensei focuses on a scientific approach, studying techniques regarding efficiency, biomechanics, physiology, together with many other aspects to construct a solid and consistent base that Traditional Karate-Do WTKF practioners follow until the present day.
Traditional Karate-Do can be described as a “self-defense martial art that was created with the Budo (the correct way) concept which has as a main objective defeat the opponent without violence. This means that the karateka who follows the Traditional Karate-Do learns how to avoid danger (stopping before happens) by staying away from dangerous situations and not inciting such scenarios. At this time, the karateka needs to remember the Niju Kun (Karate Principles) where we use our technique only as the last resource, to protect himself or herself and loved ones.
Shotokan Ryu (House of Funakoshi Sensei) is the style Sensei Rodrigo follows, teaches and learns until the present day. Long ago, this style was created in parallel with other great styles, also Karate-Do, like Shito Ryu, Wado Ryu, Goju Ryu, and more.
Shotokan was the one who moved from Okinawa to Tokyo and then, by Sensei Funakoshi and the JKA (Japan Karate Association) where one of the founders is Sensei Nishiyama, spread the style around the globe.
In addition, many federations were created to organize grading and events, such as WKF (World Karate Federation) who will present Karate at the Olympic Summer Games competition in 2020 in Japan.
Other federations and associations have many other events, such as JKS, JKA and the like.
Our World Traditional Karate-Do Federation (WTKF) follows Sensei Nishiyama’s knowledge, and also continues his legacy studying and executing events such as Workshops, Seminars, Championships and much more.
